Chinatown-Rose Pak and Union Square/Market Street are useful station names to have in mind when planning trips around San Francisco. Powell Street station is another option for getting around the city.

For a Chinatown visit, a walk from Inn on Broadway to Chinatown can be part of the plan.

When walking makes sense

Nearby destinations include Alhambra Theatre, Haas-Lilienthal House, Lafayette Park, George Sterling Memorial, Lombard Street, Ina Coolbrith Park, San Francisco Art Institute and Grace Cathedral. Grouping stops into one walk can help you plan a route, then use transit for destinations farther across the city.

Riding Muni buses and trains

Riding Muni buses and trains

Muni connects bus routes with Metro service across San Francisco. SFMTA includes the 9 San Bruno, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 22 Fillmore, 33 Ashbury/18th Street and 49 Van Ness/Mission among its routes.

An adult single ride for ages 19–64 costs $2.85 with MuniMobile or Clipper, or $3.00 with cash or a Metro ticket machine, and is valid for 120 minutes of travel.

The Muni Day Pass costs $5.70 for unlimited rides on Muni buses, trains and historic streetcars for one day. A Visitor Passport costs $15 for one day of unlimited rides on Muni, Muni Metro, historic streetcars and cable cars.

If you expect to transfer from another transit agency, Clipper offers a $2.85 discount off the adult fare for a transfer to Muni within two hours of the first trip. Clipper is the only fare product available for purchasing BART fares systemwide, so it can be useful to consider when your itinerary includes both systems.

For step-free access, downtown Muni Metro underground stations between Civic Center and The Embarcadero, along with Church Street, Castro Street, Forest Hill, Chinatown-Rose-Pak and Union Square-Market Street, have elevators from street to concourse and concourse to platform.

Cable cars: routes, fares and queues

Cable cars: routes, fares and queues

A single cable car ride costs $9 and does not include transfers. If you plan to ride cable cars alongside other Muni services, compare that fare with the $15 one-day Visitor Passport, which covers Muni, Muni Metro, historic streetcars and cable cars.

The adult monthly Muni pass is $86; the adult monthly “M” Pass, which includes cable cars, is $104. These are longer-term options, while the single ride and one-day passport suit shorter plans. Check the official site before you go for current fares and payment details.

Airport and downtown connections

For BART airport connections, 16th St./Mission Station is at 2000 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94110, and Muni connects there. The station has no parking. Southbound trains from the station serve San Francisco International Airport (SFO); check destination signs and departure announcements before boarding.

Northbound service toward Oakland International Airport (OAK) is also available from 16th St./Mission. Check the station’s destination signs and announcements when choosing a train. San Francisco International Airport is about 20 minutes by car from Inn on Broadway; Metropolitan Oakland International Airport is about 30 minutes by car. For more airport route planning, see San Francisco airport route options.

At 16th St./Mission, reaching the trains by elevator requires two lifts: a street elevator at 16th and Mission streets on the northeast side goes to the concourse, and a second elevator inside the paid area serves the platform. The station also has bike racks and 20 free Bikeep smart racks, but no bike lockers.

For a full day that mixes walking and transit, a one-day San Francisco route can help you think through the order of stops.
